It is with great joy I can announce that Blurrt will be running a weekly series of blog posts that deliver some tasty treats taken from Twitter from the baking sensation that is… The Great British Bake Off.
So quicker than you can say garibaldi – here’s what we found from Week 1’s generous serving.
- The 60 minute GBBO show generated 150,379 tweets.
- Including one hour pre and post show – between 19:00-22:00 = 201,373 tweets
- During the show tweets were split: 36% Positive, 12% Negative, 52% Neutral
- Twice as many females posted about GBBO than males – Of those whose gender we can distinguish – 23% Males, 46% Females (31% organisations/other)
- Highest individual minute of engagement was between 20:01-20:02 which recorded 4,188 posts in 60 seconds.
- Across the 60minute tv show average tweets per minute was 2,506. That’s an average of just under 42 tweets per second!
- Across the 60 minutes of broadcasting, the hashtag #GBBO (which generated an exclusive BakeOff tent emoji) was used 125,474 times – that’s 83% of all posts – good work hashtaggers!
- In the battle of Jaffa vs Drizzle, during the show the word ‘jaffa’ was tweeted 12,566 times, eclipsing the trusty ‘drizzle’ which received only 6,155 tweets.
- The three most prevalent recognised emotions expressed were: Happiness – in 42% of posts, Love in 27% and Anger in 15%. (See our lovely emotion donut later for more!)
- The Blurrt Score (a unique combination of volume and sentiment) hit a significantly low point in the evening at 20:29 – just as Mary and Paul were judging some very questionable Jaffa Cakes
- The most influential twitter account posting about Bake Off was Fearne Cotton with 7.2million followers – who posted 3 times during the show. Other influential posters included Zoella, Vicky Pattison, Sarah Millican, Michael Vaughan, Mario Falcone and Claudia Winkelman.
- The Queen of Tarts, ‘Mary’ received 9,126 mentions during the show, beating away the King of Breads, ‘Paul’ with only 5,545 mentions.

Notable Spikes in Volume
Let’s look at three spikes in Twitter engagement:
Spike 1: 20:01 – 20:02
BAKE OFF IS BACK – that theme tune is so good! I just want to go and get my rolling pin and flour but I can’t miss the Berry/Hollywood combo!
Spike 2: 20:23 – 20:24
The announcement of Mary’s technical challenge may well have finally settled the age old dispute of whether a jaffa is a cake or biscuit as we’re in cake week!
Spike 3: 20:57 – 20:58
The mirror glaze cakes have been judged and resultingly this week’s star baker is announced (well done Jane) and sadly we say goodbye to Lee.
Emotions recognised in posts: 20:00 – 21:00
Happiness: 42.4% / Love: 27.2% / Anger: 15.3% / Sadness: 5.9% / Disgust: 3.8% / Fear: 2.4%
