What an amazing talking point this has been. In the last 24 hours we collected 463,564 tweets and retweets, with a potential reach of over 885 million people.
The volume graph below demonstrates the power of Twitter with regard to breaking news and people’s willingness to share their thoughts. The spike was when the news broke of Mourinho’s sacking.
So we think we’ve got a fairly good cross section of the football community. What’s been the reaction:
Only 18% of emotion bearing football tweeters seem happy that he’s gone. The remainder all seem to support Mourinho. A whopping 32% wanted to express their thanks for what Mourinho had done for the Chelsea. 14% expressed love for the manager. 16% were sad and a significant 11% were angry about the circumstances.
The episode has also brought out people’s sense of humour. Our platform surfaces content, particularly pics and videos very easily. We picked out some of our favourites.

We’ll leave the last word to the football doyen of Twitter, Mr Rio Ferdinand:
Jose Mourinho gone but will never be forgotten on these shores. Lead Chelsea to heights never seen at the club…but ended on a sour note.
