The rugby world cup got off to a flying start this weekend with some exciting and perhaps unexpected results. As always, Blurrt was behind the scenes following every second of the action, all the time listening to what the mighty ‘tweetosphere’ was saying.

Here is a look at the Twitter reaction to yesterday’s Wales v Uruguay game as it happened.

Over 6,500 tweets were posted about the game between 2pm and 4pm. Kick-off at 2:30pm saw a surge in tweets as  viewers were keen to show their support and excitement on Twitter. The national anthems were a particularly hot topic of discussion moments before kick-off conveying both pride and frustration.

The biggest Twitter volume spike came at the end of the first half when Cory Allen scored his impressive hat-trick and thereby ending any trepidation of another Japan-style shock.

Naturally “hat-trick hero” Cory Allen was one of the most discussed elements of the game on Twitter along with several hashtags including the phrase “#WAL storm ahead”.

Sentiment is shown on a 10 point scale with 1 to 5 (everything above the line) indicating positive and -1 to -5 (everything below the line) indicating negative.

The sentiment of the tweets posted about the game was mainly positive throughout, with a couple of dips into the negative towards the end of the second half when yet more Welsh players went off with injuries.

Happiness and love were the top emotions expressed in tweets during the game, as again fans displayed high levels of excitement and pride. However, flashes of sadness and anger were also expressed which reflects the frustration of further injuries and basic execution errors for Welsh fans.
