Commonwealth Games – Hits and Misses?

July 25, 2014 — by

Blurrt is collecting all tweets mentioning the Commonwealth Games and scores the sentiment expressed within each tweet on a scale of +5 for highly positive and -5 for highly negative. The graph tells the story of the opening ceremony more than my words:

As the opening ceremony began at 9pm the volume of tweets shot up and the sentiment plummeted for the first half hour and gradually picked up. The number of negative tweets amounted to 94.93k with 77.22k of those retweeted. The gender split for the total amount of negative tweets was 44% male, 27% female and 29% other. Below is a selection of negative retweets (retweets because they represent tweets that resonated), the first being -1, the second being -2 and so on…

In contrast, Twitter activity for the first day of the games was much more positive with 93.69k tweets and 130.64k retweets of which 35% were male, 25% female and 40% organisations. The graph below shows the average sentiment score ranging from +1.5 to +3.2
